The Birthday Party That Wasn't

So, Princess just turned one whole giant year old. And as most people do when their baby turns one, we planned a birthday party. I was so excited! It was a family party that was happening on a Sunday night, the day after her birthday. And then two days before the party, on Friday, Sweetheart suddenly was very sick. I won't go into detail because really you don't want to know, but let's just say that it was stomach issues. Poor girl had no interest in eating at all, and I can't really blame her. We watched her carefully, hoping it would be a quick 24 hour bug and that the party would be on, but sadly, it continued. We canceled the party and instead had our own little party with just the four of us.

I don't think she was too impressed with the cupcake, but she really liked the candle. Fire!

For her presents, I've said it before and I'll say it again, we are such boring parents. We are the kind of parents that give birthday presents that are needed, and not necessarily the most fun, although this time I think there was a little bit of both. She got a doll that looks a lot like Sweetheart's doll, her best friend ever.

I was hopeful that if Princess had her own baby, that she would stop stealing Sweetheart's. Instead, Sweetheart has decided that she needs two of them, and the fights now go the other way. Good times!

We also got her a new carseat, hooray!! You would think this would be the boring part of the birthday presents, but they actually played with it for a whole day, buckling their babies in and taking them out over and over. I almost didn't want to put it in the car, it kept them so entertained!

A couple days later, on Monday, we ended up at the doctor's office because Sweetheart's yuckiness just wasn't going away. We were given some medicine that really helped a lot, at least at first, but by Wednesday she was back to feeling yucky.  Here is what she looked like eating lunch that day.

Can you see her? Maybe this view will be better.

Poor, sick girl! Thankfully Princess never seemed affected by this illness at all, and was just happy and healthy.

The doctor decided the sickness had gone on too long and that it was time to take action. We were sent to Primary Children's Hospital, where they did a whole bunch of tests. Sweetheart thought that peeing in a cup was the most awesome, amazing, fun thing ever, and got mad the next time she had to go and I made her do it the old-fashioned way. They did a cheek swab, which was totally optional and as part of a study on kids and asthma, but she didn't even glance away from the cartoons on the TV as they did that. She thought the x-ray was pretty cool.  None of this surprises me, though, she has always been such a trooper. The part I was nervous about was the IV. (Dun, dun, dun!)

Do you see that smile? This is my little rock star. This is the girl who, when poked by the needle, glanced over to see what was going on, and then watched curiously as they drew some blood for testing. She never made a peep, didn't even grimace. We turned the cartoons back on and she laid there quite happily receiving her IV, and before long we were sent home. The test results all came back normal, which says that it was probably something viral that just took a little extra long to get over. She is now (thankfully!) back to her happy, healthy self, and we are planning a new birthday party soon.

Probably the best thing to come out of this, at least for Princess, is blackmail material for the rest of her life. Just think, any time Sweetheart does something that Princess doesn't like, she can whip out the old, "You ruined my first birthday ever" card. Priceless!
