What Would You Do With $100?

I have tons and tons of catching up to do, and I'll get to that, but first I have a question for y'all. This year for Christmas Marquis's parents gave us a very unusual gift. They gave us $100, along with a little booklet that explained the story of this guy. Basically, the short story is that he found a note on the ground that said "This is for you," and wrapped inside that note was a shiny one hundred dollar bill. Instead of spending that money on himself, he decided to spread the love and he ended up spending the money on other people. He would buy little presents for his friends, or some chicken nuggets for a homeless man, or a donut for the next person in line at the bakery, all kinds of things like that. He blogged about his experience here.

So our gift was $100, all in ones (I think it looks like we are drug dealers, Marquis thinks it looks like we are on our way to a strip club) with the challenge to pass it on, to see who we can help, how we can give it away in the service of others. We have done a lot of pondering about this and a lot of talking, but I'm afraid that now over a month later our present still looks exactly like this. Well, not exactly, the tin also used to have a bunch of candy surrounding the cash which has mysteriously disappeared.

We have a few ideas in mind, but I also wanted to throw this out into the interwebs and pick the brains of you good people. So, if this was your cash and your challenge, what would you do? Who would you help? We are thinking that while doing small things for people can really make a big difference, we would love to give this to someone who actually needs it.

Also, as part of the challenge we have been told we can increase the money by any way we see fit, so I wanted to put out there that if anyone would like to donate to the cause, let me know. If we have people who want to donate then we can figure out a way for you to get the cash to us. Or even better, you can take that money and join in the challenge with us, go ahead and help people however you can with however much money you can, and then just email me and let me know what you did. I'll do a followup post later explaining what we decided to do with the money and I'll add in there the info from anyone who wants to join. Email me at Emily@marquisnemily.com with your stories. I think this is going to be a lot of fun!

Hi Emily. I love this idea and will be joining with my own $100. I did hear of something similar to this that some parents did around Christmas. Maybe a small portion of the money could be given to CG & Sweetheart (guessing Princess is too young) and ask them to watch for people they see that have a need. Rules of course being they can't name themselves as the person with the need and you have final say :) You can spend some time talking about physical, mental, emotional needs etc. Always interesting to see what kids notice...

Oh, Hannah, this makes my heart happy! Good idea involving the kids, we definitely want them to experience this, too!
