The Truth About Redheads - For My Birthday Girl

(This adorable picture was captured by my friend and favorite photographer Amy. Seriously, go to her website and contact her now for your pics, you'll love her!)

First, a seemingly unrelated story. In high school one of my best friends was (still is) a redhead. When you first meet her, you would think that she was the sweetest, kindest person ever, and really, she is. But one day, while walking along the halls of our high school, out of nowhere she suddenly said, "F*@%." Now, this is a family blog, so sorry about those special characters there, but that is what she said. And I was pretty surprised, so of course I said, "Wait, what?" To which she answered. "F#^%.  F%$^, f@#*, f*^%." I was confused and said, "Where did that come from?" To which she answered, "I had never said that word before. I just wanted to know what it would feel like to say it."

Makes perfect sense, right?

From experiences with this friend and more recently with my own, darling, red-headed child, I have decided something. You see, I figured out that God sends a child with red hair as a bit of a warning. It's his way of saying, "By the way, this beautiful little girl here? She is an amazingly wonderful child, but wow is there ever some fire inside! You might need to watch her a little extra closely, okay?"

All that extra spunk and fire sure adds up to a lot of fun, and I love every red hair on my beautiful Princess's head. So for Princess, for her great big second birthday, here are some things I love the most about her.

1. Upon entering a new environment, she is initially pretty timid and clingy. Once she has been there long enough to start getting comfortable, she then will immediately find the highest point in the room and try to climb up to it.

2. Princess has an inborn intuition. She somehow knows exactly the thing in the room that you most do not want her to touch/do/play with. Which of course means that that is exactly what she will go for first, usually with the most adorable wrinkled-nose smirk that says, "I'm being naughty right now, teehee!" And that smirk makes it so hard to get mad at her!

3. She is an amazing little talker and knows so many words! She also constantly asks, "What's that?" over and over. In church just yesterday, right after the opening prayer, she very loudly exclaimed, "Ok, all done!" And then she tried to leave.

4. Sometimes those words aren't as clear, though. If Princess comes up to you and asks for what clearly sounds like bacon, what she really want is a blanket. I haven't tried to fix this one because I really don't want it to go away just yet, it's too cute!

5. I don't think anyone in the world gives better hugs.

6. She still likes to give those hugs to her mama.

7. This girl is so funny, she makes me laugh all day. While I sat on the couch working a few days ago, she came up to me and said, "Pants off, k?" She then took her pants off super fast and I before I could even react she ran laughing down the hallway yelling, "I'm naked-a, I'm naked-a!" I had no clue she even knew how to take off her own pants!

8. When they are not fighting and (literally) ripping each other's hair out, Princess adores her sister and loves to follow her around, hugging her and chatting to her. They are the cutest little best friends ever, and no one understands Princess's jibber-jabber better than Sweetheart does.

9. She also adores her biggest sister. She insists on holding the phone when we call CG, saying over and over, "I wanna talk-a her!" Since the last time that CG went back to California, Princess keeps telling me that CG is just downstairs, and sometimes will even yell down the stairs to tell her biggest sister what is going on that day.

10. Awhile ago I left my phone unattended for about half of a second. When I came back, Princess was googling the word "sass." I'm sorry, my dear, but that is one subject in which you need no more research!

So happy birthday to my sweet, wonderful, spunky, sassy Princess. These past two years have flown, and I can't imagine life without you!
