When Marquis and I first started dating, CG was 2-1/2 years old and still lived here in Utah, and because of that she quite often would go on our dates with us. While she was here with us this time we did it again, leaving the little girls at home to eat their usual SunButter and jam sandwiches with a babysitter while we took CG to one of our favorite places to eat, The Copper Onion. I was strictly forbidden from taking pictures of CG and Marquis while there (party poopers!), so all I have are pics of the food.
But oh, the food!!! Nothing at the Copper Onion is what it appears to be. It looks like super delicious comfort food, but then you find out that it is actually fancied up extremely delicious comfort food.
For example, CG had the French dip sandwich. While this might look like a normal French dip, it is made with Wagyu beef, which basically means this cow was fed wine and beer, given daily massages and encouraged to be as lazy as possible. This makes the meat taste incredible, and really makes for a fancy French dip. It also had duck fat aioli, which is a very delicious homemade mayonnaise.
Marquis had the biscuits and gravy. It normally comes with eggs on the side, but because of his (thankfully) mild egg allergy, we talked them into subbing some ham. Of course this isn't your basic biscuits and gravy. The biscuits are actually jalapeno cheddar scones with sausage and bacon gravy, so he had bacon, sausage and ham on his plate at the same time. Have I ever told you that we aren't Jewish? Tangent, I know, but just in case you were wondering. Anyway, the ham isn't normal ham, it's Snake River Farms ham, which means this is a Berkshire pig. Berkshire pigs are a special breed that are especially delicious.
I had the eggs Benedict. I usually have eggs or seafood when we go out I've noticed, probably because I rarely get to have them at home and I love them. The eggs are organic eggs from Clifford Farms and you can sure taste the difference in super fresh eggs. I think this is the best eggs Benedict I've ever had, and I've tried a lot! Of course the ham was the same Snake River Farms ham. I pretty much cleaned my plate!
If I wasn't completely stuffed we would have also ordered this baby, the hazelnut chocolate cake was calling my name!
After the Copper Onion, we took a little trip to Tony Caputo's, a local deli and market. If you gave Marquis a few thousand dollars and an hour in Caputo's, he could happily and easily spend it on all the high-end foodstuffs. They have every kind of cheese you can imagine, along with any kind of fancy deli meat. One of the meats is over $100 a pound! They have a tasting station where you can taste any kind of oil or vinegar that they sell, and we were able to sample some vinegars that were over $100 a bottle. The little bit they poured in our sample cups were probably a couple of bucks each, and wow, were they ever good! Hooray for free sampling!
My favorite thing about Caputo's, though, is their chocolate. Don't go there looking for Hershey's, they wouldn't let that abomination in the door. Instead there are dark chocolates from all over Europe, the really delicious stuff that you just need one bite of and can be satisfied for hours. One of my favorites is actually made in Utah, called Amano. We picked up a bar of that for me and on the way out we tried their drinking chocolate. Drinking chocolate is kind of like hot chocolate, but only in that they are both brown and wet and have "chocolate" in the name. This is really high quality chocolate, melted down with cream and some spices. They give you the teeniest shot of it for a dollar, and that might just be the best dollar I have ever spent. I've been dreaming about that drinking chocolate it was so good! It was the perfect dessert. Sorry, hazelnut chocolate cake, you would have been delicious, but this was perfection in a teeny tiny cup.
CG, thank you for a fun day, it was wonderful to spend time with just you and pretend to be fancy for just a couple of hours! I can't wait to do it again!
