Recently we have decided to give our kids experiences as presents for their birthdays instead of just throwing more crappy toys and things they don't need their way. So far we are loving this idea and having a great time! For Sweetheart's experience we decided to go fishing. She loves fishing, but we are really not great at it and have not had much (any) success. But hey, why not give it another shot? And yes, we are almost two months late, but we moved and excuses, blah, blah, more excuses. She's still young enough that she didn't seem to notice or care, thank goodness!
One of my good high school friends grew up on a trout farm. I loved going to this place, there were so many things to explore, so many things to do, a trampoline that was perfect for sleepovers, not to mention that she had a whole flock of super cute brothers to crush on. Needless to say, I ended up spending a lot of time there. When Marquis suggested going there so we could actually catch some fish, I thought the idea was brilliant! Plus, they have all the gear and bait there, so all we have to do is show up, it's perfect!
Sweetheart seemed to agree that it was a perfect idea, we got her line thrown in first and she was happy as a clam.
Of course, because it was Sweetheart's birthday experience, Princess had to go and show her up and catch the first fish. She didn't seem too sure about the whole thing. Why did we want her to hold on to this line with the slimy, flopping thing again?
Thankfully Sweetheart soon had her own fish, and she seemed much more excited than Princess about showing off her catch.
The fish farm guy (one of the aforementioned totally crushable brothers) offered to let Princess feel the fish's beautiful shiny scales, but she didn't seem all that impressed.
Meanwhile, Sweetheart was off after her next one, which didn't take long. So this is what successful fishing feels like!
"Nope, Dad, I don't want to touch that one, either."
And yes, that is snow on the ground. Perfect fishing weather, don't you think?
The girls liked watching the fish swim around in the bucket.
The nice fish farm guy let the girls feed the fish for a little while, although I think more of those little pellets ended up down in the hood of Princess's coat and on the bank than out in the water for the fish.
They filleted the fish for us before we left, and when we got home Marquis fried them up with some butter. There isn't much Sweetheart loves more than some yummy fish, and she scarfed it down. The fish was so good that we already plan on going back and doing this again, probably soon and often. This birthday experience was a gigantic success!
