Catching Up - January

Compared to December, my post to catch up on January is puny! Just six little pictures, and only half of them of people. (Well, I do have more pictures, but I'm saving them for other posts.) So here's what we were up to in January.

This blurry, crappy cell phone pic shows our very first meal in our new house. I purposely had some shredded chicken taco meat and tortillas already made so I could just throw the meat in the crock pot on moving day. I knew where the knives were so we could chop some veggies to go on top, and tada! First home cooked meal in our new house, on our very first day there.

Later I made a gigantic pot of French onion soup. We have made this soup many times, but this was the first meal we made for other people in our brand new house, which makes it memorable and worth documenting. And it was super delicious! The best part is that I made A TON and it freezes really well, so we've got some yummy soup waiting for us later.

When my sister found out that we went to Magelby's and didn't try the chocolate cake, the infamous, divine, you only need one bite and you're happy forever chocolate cake, she gave us a really hard time. So we went to Magelby's Fresh (which is supposed to be the same thing) and picked up some cake.

First off, the reason we didn't get the cake the first time around was because it was $8. And also because I was super full, but I probably would have taken a slice home if not for the $8 price tag. This piece of cake was either $2.50 or $3, I don't remember. That $8 cake was also a layered cake, where this one was a thick sheet cake. I was so skeptical that it would be yummy that I sent this picture to my sister asking if I indeed had the right thing in my hand. And then I ate it. Wow, yummy!!!! This was good enough that it has convinced me to sometime pay the $8 for the layer cake at the other Magelby's, because my sister responded and said that the one I had was good, but the layered one was ever better. I'll keep you updated as I investigate. In the meantime if you want to try the best chocolate cake I've ever had, go buy a pound of better and whip up the Pioneer Woman's chocolate sheet cake. That one really will send you to heaven! And then you should probably go to the gym.

The girls also spent a good portion of January discovering the fun that exists in a closet with sliding doors. It's awesome, you can go in one side, run down the long, dark tunnel, then slide it open on the other side and come out. Amazing! The reverse works, too, in case you are wondering. They have tested it out for me precisely 215,298 times and counting.

I have come to the realization that the pretty mirrors on those sliding doors will just plain not be clean until those kids grow up and leave the house. I am destined to see fingerprints every time I look in those mirrors, and that's fine with me.

Because this place is much more permanent than pretty much everywhere else we've lived, we have been unpacking boxes that haven't been touched in years and years. You find really funny things when that happens, like this beauty:

Many years ago when we packed that box, our little Sweetheart wasn't anywhere on our radar, and although I had remotely heard about peanut allergies, I never thought about them because it didn't touch our life. Marquis and I both laughed at this one because it is something that would never enter our house any more. This one had been cleaned out and had weird odds and ends inside. Sweetheart thought the peanut man on this was hilarious, so I cleaned it out really well (even though it had already been cleaned out) and she has now claimed it. The thing she keeps inside is so ironic and funny that I'm going to give it it's own post. So there is your cliffhanger for the day. What can it be? You'll just have to wait and see.
