The first hurricane was supposed to hit sometime during the night. I went to bed expecting to be woken by the sounds of high winds and, well, I wasn't sure what else I would hear because I had never had the opportunity to be in the middle of a hurricane before. I certainly didn't think I'd have a peaceful night. Instead, I woke at a fairly normal time after a very restful sleep, and looked out the window to see this:
And this:
And this:
Apparently, when the storm hit the Big Island, the mountains/volcanoes basically disintegrated the storm, turning a raging hurricane into some pretty clouds. While it would have been exciting to have a crazy hurricane story to tell, I'm so glad it turned out to be the most boring hurricane ever. I'm also so grateful that the second hurricane that had been following right behind decided to turn and go harmlessly out to sea, not even sending any rain or clouds our way.
Since there was no hurricane, we left for another day of sight seeing. A lot of things were closed because of the (nonexistent) storm, but we decided to go see what there was to see in the town of Lahaina.
On the way we stopped at a little place that is apparently great for whale watching. Unfortunately it wasn't whale watching season, but that just means that we have to go back! Even without whales, the spot was beautiful, and we took a few photos.
See this guy right here? Best father-in-law ever.
And this is my favorite picture of our group from the whole trip. The clouds are just amazing, and we all look so happy, I love it!
In Lahaina, there is a tree that is gigantic. It is called a Banyan tree, and it has spread out and sent roots down from the branches, so it has spread for about one full city block. It is pretty amazing to see!
Lahaina is a town full of little shops and restaurants. As we were walking along one of the streets, one of the people who worked in a spa suddenly fell in love with my mother-in-law. He grabbed her and dragged her into the spa, and couldn't stop telling her how beautiful she was.
He gushed and ooo'd and aaahed over her for quite a while before covering half her face with some kind of miracle cream, telling her repeatedly that he loved her, and then finally letting her go. A good daughter-in-law probably should have rescued her from the crazy lovesick, overzealous salesman, but this one just forced them to have a picture instead.
After Lahaina, one car declared themselves exhausted and hungry, and we went back to the rental house for a bit while the other group did a little more exploring. After a bit of a rest, we were ready for the next beach, so off we went!
Marquis was having a grand time riding the boogie board, and even grabbed a surfboard that had been abandoned on the beach to give that a try. He definitely is a fish in the water!
After awhile at the beach, we went back to the rental house where Marquis grilled up some delicious salmon for dinner, yum!
