That Sunday was an incredibly beautiful day in Maui. We woke early and went to church, which was very enjoyable. From there we found a little church we had heard about, the very first chapel for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. It wasn't too far away, and it was a beautiful spot!
It had the most beautiful little doorknob! I felt a little silly taking a picture because, well, it's a doorknob! But then a moment later I noticed my brother-in-law doing the same thing and didn't feel so silly.
When we did Road to Hana the day of the hurricane, we only went part of the way. We had turned back right before the road gets really scary, so Sunday after changing in the restrooms at the teeny LDS church, we decided to start going the other direction around the loop. This road was just as windy with lots of one-lane bridges and sheer drop-offs, but the road was a lot less maintained. There were a few times I wondered if I was going to survive the trip, but most of the time was spent being amazed at how beautiful it is there.
It started off rather dry, totally different than what we had seen on the other parts of the island.
But as we made our way to where we had already been, it got more and more green.
When we got almost back to the church where Lindberg is buried, we pulled off to go for a swim in the Seven Sacred Pools. As the water from the middle of the island runs down to the sea, some of it gathers in these pools that step down to the ocean. The lower ones weren't very deep and the sides were rather jagged, but as we hiked up the pools we came to one that was deep and beautiful, with a waterfall filling it on one side. In the picture below you can see Marquis diving off the side into the pool. This was a truly beautiful place!
Our trip was nearly over, but we had one more day. The final day was a day that I knew was going to be hard for me, a day that I would face one of my biggest fears. I'll tell you more about tomorrow. Yep, another cliffhanger!
